Opportunity for Iowa Photographers.

Entry: Dec 26 - Deadline: Jan 9, 2019

It has been a great 40 years for the Polk County Heritage Gallery! In 1979, the first Gallery's Advisory board was formed, with the first show coming the following year. Since then, business has come and gone; the arts have flourished in the city, and the gallery has remained true to its mission - to provide a beautiful multi-use exhibition space for extraordinary art and historical exhibits contributing to the cultural development of Des Moines and Polk County; and to complement existing educational and cultural institutions.

The Polk County Heritage Gallery is pleased to announce the first Juried Photo Exhibition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the gallery and its success, with the theme: Captured in Des Moines. The exhibition aims to highlight the city of Des Moines through the lens of talented photographers. We offer an opportunity to all photographer to submit their best photographs, oldest or latest, to help tell the story of Des Moines. Artists may submit all types of photographic works including digital, analog, showcasing their favorite places, people, events... Whatever might showcase best the "DSM vibe"!

This year we are offering up to $350 in awards. The photographs will be exhibited in the historic downtown gallery for about seven weeks. During the reception, the juror will honor the deserving talents with eight Awards, One BEST OF SHOW, Four MERIT AWARDS and Three HONORABLE MENTION AWARDS. The selected artists will receive monetary gifts from the Heritage Gallery and have recognition on our website and social media.

JUROR: Ben Easter

These are the qualities Ben Easter strives to achieve in his work. Ben has been creating images since he was a kid, but while living in Paris in 2008, Ben’s professional photography career began when his amateur work was noticed by the owner of a boutique ad agency, Darwin FX. They hired Ben as a photographer and bought him his first professional camera. Having spent years in front of the camera as an actor in film and television, and having appeared in magazines like Cosmopolitan, cameras were no strangers to Ben. But stepping behind the lens as a photographer and director seemed inevitable to this life-long storyteller.
